  • On Friday, the CDC will reveal an update to the criteria it employs to decide whether to suggest face masks.
  • The focus on Covid-19 case counts should shift to a more comprehensive assessment of risk from the coronavirus to the community.
  • According to the latest data, approximately 95% of U.S. counties are recommended to wear masks due to their substantial or high transmission rates.

According to two sources, the Biden administration will relax federal mask-wearing guidelines on Friday, allowing most Americans to no longer wear masks in indoor public spaces.

The CDC will change its metrics for determining face covering recommendations on Friday, shifting from Covid-19 case counts to a more comprehensive view of risk from the coronavirus in communities. Currently, masks are recommended for people in communities with substantial or high transmission, which accounts for approximately 95% of U.S. counties, according to the latest data.

The new metrics will consider caseloads, hospitalizations, and local hospital capacity, which have improved during the emergence of the omicron variant. This strain is highly transmissible, but indications are that it is less severe than earlier strains, particularly for people who are fully vaccinated and boosted. Under the new guidelines, the vast majority of Americans will no longer live in areas where indoor masking in public is recommended, based on current data.

The Biden administration is shifting its focus from preventing all instances of Covid-19 infection to preventing serious illness and death from the virus as part of a strategy adjustment for a new phase in the response as the virus becomes endemic.

Two individuals who are knowledgeable about the alteration discussed the CDC's impending announcement on the condition of anonymity.

Nearly all U.S. states that had enforced indoor mask-wearing mandates during the winter omicron surge are now lifting them as cases have drastically decreased nationwide. Some have abolished the mandates entirely, while others have maintained mask-wearing requirements in schools and medical facilities.

The impact of the new CDC guidance on U.S. federal mandates requiring face coverings on public transportation was not immediately clear.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC's director, has announced that a change is forthcoming.

"Hospital capacity should be considered an additional crucial indicator. Our hospitals must be capable of treating patients with heart attacks and strokes. Our emergency departments must not become so congested that patients with urgent medical needs have to wait in line," she stated during a White House briefing last week.

Officials from the CDC declined to confirm a specific release date on Thursday.
