The Paralympic Games are set to begin in Paris in 2024, with venues across the city welcoming a new group of athletes.

Although the International Paralympic Committee does not provide prize money for winning medals, many countries offer medal bonuses to their athletes.

The earnings of some athletes for their sporting achievements, as compiled by CNBC from various sources, are as follows:

The Canadian Paralympic Committee and host country France have announced that Paralympic medalists will receive the same cash bonus as their Olympic counterparts for placing on the podium.

In addition to Spain, a recent grant now provides Paralympic athletes with the same cash bonuses as Olympic medalists, including 94,000 euros ($105,312) for gold medalists, 48,000 euros for silver medalists, and 30,000 euros for bronze medalists.

Since 2016, Malaysia has been awarding equal cash rewards to its Paralympic medalists as their Olympic counterparts, with gold medalists receiving 1 million ringgit ($228,623), silver medalists getting 300,000 ringgit, and bronze medalists earning 100,000 ringgit.

The president of Malaysia's Paralympic Council announced that three external companies will provide additional cash bonuses of up to 60,000 ringgit for gold medalists, 30,000 ringgit for silver medalists, and 15,000 ringgit for bronze medalists.

The Japanese Para Sports Association will award 3 million yen ($20,780) to Japan's Paralympic gold medalists, which is less than the 5 million yen given to Olympic gold medalists by the Japan Olympic Committee. Paralympic silver and bronze medalists will receive the same payouts as their Olympic counterparts, which are 2 million yen and 1 million yen, respectively.

Paralympic medalists in Australia, Israel, and South Korea receive cash rewards equivalent to their Olympic counterparts.

Biggest disparity

While Hong Kong and Singapore offer the highest payouts to their Olympic medalists, they do not provide as much financial support to their Paralympic champions.

Despite the Jockey Club in Hong Kong announcing that Paralympic gold medalists will receive almost double the amount they received in Tokyo 2020, the HK$1.5 million bonus is still significantly less than the HK$6 million reward granted to gold medalists at the Olympics a few weeks ago.

An Olympic medalist receives HK$750,000, while bronze medalists get HK$375,000, significantly lower than what their Paralympic counterparts receive.

Singapore's Paralympic gold medalists will receive half of what their Olympic counterparts get, which is 500,000 Singapore dollars ($380,000), while silver and bronze medalists will earn $300,000 and $150,000 respectively.

In 2016, the difference in prize money was discussed in Singapore's parliament. A minister stated that the rewards for the Olympics and Paralympics are determined by non-governmental organizations, specifically the Singapore National Paralympics Council and the Singapore National Olympics Council, which are mostly funded by various sponsorships.

Unlike Olympic athletes, British Paralympians do not receive prize money for their medal wins, but they are provided with an annual training allowance.

The exact monetary reward for China's Paralympic gold medalists varies by region and event.

At the Paralympic Games, China had the most athletes with 282, followed by Brazil with 255. France, the host country, sent 237 athletes.

NBCUniversal, the parent company of CNBC, owns NBC Sports and NBC Olympics. NBC Olympics holds the U.S. broadcast rights to all Summer and Winter Games through 2032.
