The launch of Ram electric pickup trucks in Detroit has been postponed from this year to the first half of 2025 due to ongoing testing.
On Tuesday, CEO Carlos Tavares refused to reveal the reasons for the delays or a precise timeline regarding the electric trucks, which include the all-electric "REV" model and the extended-range "Ramcharger," which is equipped with an electric generator and a gas engine.
"Tavares stated during an online media event that the team is currently facing a substantial amount of workload and wants to be cautious in validating products. To ensure accuracy, they are taking their time and managing the peak. They are not in a rush to validate and prefer to take a few additional weeks to do so properly rather than rushing and making mistakes in terms of quality."
Before focusing on the new trucks, Tavares stated that work must be finished on the Dodge Charger Daytona and Jeep Wagoneer S EVs, which are anticipated to be launched by the year's end.
Stellantis' upcoming electric pickups will be the first to be constructed on the company's new "STLA Frame platform," which is designed for larger trucks and Jeep SUVs. This platform is expected to be a "multi-energy platform" that can accommodate internal combustion engines, hybrids, electric models using batteries, fuel cells, and range-extended electric propulsion systems.
The Ramcharger extended-range electric vehicle can function as a zero-emissions EV until its battery runs out, and an electric onboard generator powered by a 27-gallon, 3.6-liter V6 engine will take over to power the vehicle.
The automaker confirmed on Tuesday that the REV will have a single-charge range of 500 miles and the Ramcharger will have a class-leading range of up to 690 miles.
""We are managing the peak of a huge product blitz coming to the U.S. market in the next few months," Tavares said."
The launch of Stellantis' U.S. EV offensive coincides with President-elect Trump's promise to reduce or eliminate many of the Biden administration's EV goals and funding.
Last week, it was reported that Trump's transition team plans to eliminate the $7,500 consumer tax credit for EV purchases as part of broader tax-reform legislation. This move would fulfill Trump's campaign promise to remove such incentives and EV initiatives.
Tavares, who has both criticized governments for EV regulations and touted their benefits, stated that the company will adapt to any changes made by the Trump administration.
