Stellantis postpones electric Ram pickup to prioritize plug-in 'EREV' model.
- Stellantis announced on Wednesday that it will postpone the release of an all-electric Ram pickup from next year until 2026.
- Postponing the full battery-electric model of the truck will help prioritize the development of an electric range-extended version called the Ramcharger.
- The Ramcharger will be open for customer orders in the first half of 2025, and the Ram 1500 REV will be launched in 2026, Stellantis announced.
The Ram pickup's all-electric version will be delayed from 2025 to 2026, as FCA announced on Wednesday, due to slower-than-expected adoption of EVs and competitors' struggles to profit from electric trucks.
The company announced that it will prioritize the development of an electric range-extended version of the truck called the Ramcharger, which features a gas engine combined with EV technologies, rather than fully implementing the full battery-electric model that had already been postponed from this year.
Ramcharger's launch was prompted by high consumer demand, preserving a competitive edge in technology and delaying the market's demand for half-ton BEV pickups, according to Ram.
The Ramcharger will be open for customer orders in the first half of 2025, and the Ram 1500 REV will launch in 2026, Stellantis announced.
Since Tim Kuniskis returned as CEO of Ram earlier this month, following a management shakeup that included the departure of Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, the change in priorities has been the first major announced shift.
Kuniskis had retired from Stellantis in May before returning to the automaker. He stated earlier this month that changes are expected for the struggling brand, which reported a 24% sales decline through the third quarter of this year.
"I did not get off the bench to not come here and call some audibles, so stay tuned. More coming," he said during a brief media appearance a day after returning to the company.
The slow rollout of the redesigned Ram 1500 model and delays to the heavy-duty trucks are responsible for the current problems with the brand's sales, according to Kuniskis.
Kuniskis stated that the Ramcharger pickup is the brand's "Goldilocks truck," meaning it has the perfect balance of power, range, and capabilities, although there is still much work to be done to improve it further.
The Ramcharger is classified as an "extended-range electric vehicle," or EREV. It functions as a zero-emissions EV until its battery depletes, at which point an electric onboard generator, powered by a 27-gallon, 3.6-liter V6 engine, takes over to power the vehicle.
The estimated range of the Ramcharger is up to 690 miles, with a battery-powered range of up to 145 miles and an electric generator range of 130 kilowatts.
