SpaceX is introducing a compact version of its Starlink antennas called "Mini," which the company is promoting as a portable option for its satellite internet customers.
SpaceX's customer email on Wednesday stated that Starlink Mini is a compact, portable kit that fits easily in a backpack and provides high-speed, low-latency internet on the go.
The Starlink Mini antennas are currently available for purchase in a limited quantity at $599 each, which is $100 more than the base model "Standard" antenna sold with Residential service. Despite the company's goal to lower the price tag.
SpaceX aims to lower the cost of Starlink, particularly for regions where internet access has been expensive or nonexistent, as stated in the email.
The monthly cost of a Starlink Mini service is $150, with an additional $30 per month bundle for a Residential service. The "Mini Roam" service can be used anywhere in the US but has a 50GB data cap, with Starlink charging $1 per GB for additional data.
The Starlink Mini antenna is approximately half the size and a third the weight of Starlink's Standard antenna, measuring at around 12 inches by 10 inches by 1.5 inches and weighing just over 2 pounds.
SpaceX's email states that the Starlink Mini has a built-in WiFi router and lower power consumption than other antennas, while still providing download speeds over 100 megabits per second.
Starlink Mini deliveries have not been specified in the email, but Vice President of Starlink Engineering Michael Nicolls announced on social media that the company is increasing production of Starlink Mini and it will be available in international markets soon.
On Monday, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, stated in a post that it took less than 5 minutes to set up a Starlink Mini.
"This product will change the world," Musk declared.
Since its launch in 2020, SpaceX has continuously grown its Starlink network and product line. Currently, the company has over 6,000 Starlink satellites in orbit, connecting more than 3 million customers in 100 countries worldwide. Initially aimed at consumer customers, SpaceX has since expanded into various markets, including national security, enterprise, mobility, maritime, and aviation. This expansion has disrupted the existing satellite communications industry.
