Automakers need to deliver a low-priced EV they can make money on, says former Ford CEO Mark Fields

Although auto sales in the US have remained stable in 2024, they are not as high as some had predicted at the beginning of the year. Barclays has lowered its 2024 sales forecast from 16 million vehicles to 15.8 million, citing a 15.7 million sales pace through August.

"If manufacturers aim to maintain high prices, it will be challenging for the seasonally adjusted annual rate to exceed the ~16.0mn level, despite potential interest rate cuts that may improve affordability," Barclay's Dan Levy wrote in an investor note on Thursday.

Through August, Ford's U.S. sales increased by 4.3% to 1.4 million units.

While not all automakers report monthly sales, the Hyundai brand reported a 22% increase in sales last month compared to August 2023.
