New York regional sports app to be launched through bundled services by YES Network and MSG Networks.
- The app, which streams games from the New York Yankees, New York Rangers, and New York Knicks, among others, is being launched by the joint venture between the networks that air these games locally.
- The Gotham Sports App will be launched prior to the NHL and NBA seasons in the fall.
- Two regional sports networks have bundled their apps for the first time in a combined package.
In the fall, Gotham Advanced Media and Entertainment, a joint venture between MSG Networks and the YES Network, will introduce a new app that will broadcast local games for seven New York area teams.
It is reported that two regional sports networks have joined their apps into a single bundle for the first time, as announced on Wednesday.
The Gotham Sports app will debut before the NBA and NHL seasons, allowing locals to stream the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, Brooklyn Nets, and New York Yankees with a subscription.
The Gotham Package, which grants access to all teams, costs $359.99 annually and $41.99 monthly, almost the same as the monthly price of the joint Venu streaming service that was temporarily blocked with an injunction earlier this month.
Customers who only watch some of the teams can purchase access to MSG+ or the YES App services for $29.99 and $24.99 monthly, respectively. If they already have MSG Networks and YES Network via their pay-TV subscription, they will receive Gotham Sports App's services for no additional fee.
MSG Networks President and CEO Andrea Greenberg stated in a press release that the Gotham Sports App provides fans with a single access point for New York area sporting events from both MSG Networks and the YES Network, as the fragmentation of outlets carrying fan favorite sports programming has increased.
The joint venture does not include SportsNet New York, which is only accessible through FuboTV, DirecTV streaming, and online login for those who pay for cable.
Sterling Entertainment Enterprises, and co-own SportsNet New York.
In recent years, the regional sports networks industry has experienced significant transformations, with Boston's local cable network being the first to launch a stand-alone regional streaming service in 2022, followed by other markets.
In March 2023, Diamond Sports Group, the largest owner of regional sports networks, filed for bankruptcy, prompting many professional teams across leagues to alter the way they broadcast their games.
Recently, several NBA, WNBA, and NHL teams have started using local broadcasters, including the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks.
Some MLB teams have opted to have their games produced by the league.
The Gotham Sports App is not the first regional sports streaming option available to residents of the greater New York area. Both YES Network and MSG Networks launched separate streaming services last year, and customers can still pay a cheaper rate if they only want one of the networks' services and not the combined package.
Not all regional sports streaming services are subscription-based. The NHL's Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks have announced that their games will be locally aired on Victory+, a free, ad-supported streaming service owned by A Parent Media Co.
Previously, both teams' local games were broadcast on a regional sports network owned by Diamond Sports.
