A rodent infestation at a distribution center in Arkansas has led to Family Dollar voluntarily recalling several products that were shipped to more than 400 stores in the South.
On Saturday, Family Dollar temporarily closed 404 affected locations in addition to recalling products, according to the New York Times. A spokeswoman did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.
The FDA announced on Friday that it had recently inspected a facility in West Memphis, Arkansas, following a consumer complaint. During the inspection, regulators discovered live and dead rodents in various stages of decay, as well as rodent feces, urine, gnawing, nesting, and odors throughout the facility. Additionally, they found dead birds, bird droppings, and products stored in conditions that could lead to contamination.
In January 2022, over 1,100 dead rodents were discovered following a fumigation at a facility, according to the agency. Additionally, regulators found evidence of a history of infestation. An examination of the company's internal records revealed that over 2,300 rodents were collected from March to September of the previous year.
Family Dollar's distribution facility was found to have unacceptable conditions that violate federal law, putting families' health at risk. Rodent contamination can cause salmonella and other infections, the FDA stated. Family Dollar claimed they were not aware of any illness reports related to the recall.
The recall covers all drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and human and animal food products that were stored and shipped from the center to 404 stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
The alert pertains to purchases made from Family Dollar stores in six specific states between January 1st of this year and the present. Items that were shipped directly to the store by the distributor or manufacturer are not included in the recall. Additionally, the recalls do not affect any other locations.
Family Dollar is requesting its affected stores to check their stock and quarantine any affected products immediately. Additionally, customers who may have purchased affected products can return them to the Family Dollar store where they were bought without receipts.
