The fast-food giant announced that it will invest over $100 million to increase sales and accelerate recovery at its affected franchisees following last month's E. coli outbreak linked to slivered onions.
$65 million will be invested in supporting owners who have lost business, with a focus on the hardest-hit states, while approximately $35 million will be invested in traffic-driving programs, including marketing efforts, according to a memo to owners and employees viewed by CNBC.
McDonald's will develop "local recovery plans for highly impacted markets" with further details to be released in the upcoming weeks, according to the memo.
McDonald's Chief Impact Officer Michael Gonda and Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer Tariq Hassan stated in a memo that the company has successfully navigated a complex and fast-changing situation, moved at an unmatched pace, and demonstrated the true character of its brand through unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of its customers. As the company enters the 'Recovery' phase, it will continue to uphold its commitment to doing the right thing.
The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg earlier reported the recovery investments.
Last month, during the company's earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Ian Borden informed investors that daily sales and traffic decreased immediately after a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announcement linking the E. coli outbreak to McDonald's Quarter Pounders. However, executives stated that they do not anticipate this situation will have a significant impact on their business.
The Quarter Pounder burgers with slivered onions have been reinstated on all restaurant menus nationwide, following their temporary removal from some locations, as per the memo to franchisees.
The CDC released its latest update on the outbreak, reporting a total of 104 cases, 37 hospitalizations, and one death across 14 states on Wednesday.
The Food and Drug Administration declared that there is no ongoing food safety issue linked to the outbreak at McDonald's restaurants.
