Luxury advisors have identified the top 9 'must-have' travel experiences of 2024.
The pandemic brought about an increase in "travel experiences" that offer more meaningful and purposeful activities that explore destinations in a deeper and slower manner.
Many people seek to not only visit a location but also to gain knowledge and undergo personal growth while there.
Virtuoso, a luxury travel company, requested 20,000 of its travel advisors to share their top experiences for 2024.
Here are the nine “must-have” experiences that topped the list.
1. Dark sky tourism
Instead of concentrating on daytime activities, dark-sky tourism emphasizes nighttime experiences.
Trips can involve stargazing, observing the Northern Lights, or exploring nocturnal animals.
Virtuoso recommends trips to Norway, Iceland, and Canada, while noting that travelers who prefer warmer weather can witness the total solar eclipse on April 8 in Northern Mexico.
Travelers can explore 200 "Dark Sky Places" in 22 countries, ranging from Blanco, Texas to Albanya, Spain.
2. ‘Slow’ safaris
While safaris are a popular choice for many travelers, it's important to remember that the focus shouldn't solely be on finding the "Big Five" animals, such as the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo.
Virtuoso states that "slow safaris" offer a tranquil experience of Africa's diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes, providing a peaceful contrast to the more thrilling activities like wildebeest migration and lion hunts.
Misty Belles, the company's vice president of global public relations, stated that slow safaris provide a chance to observe some of Africa's less stealthy wildlife at a more leisurely pace. She added that these safaris can include activities such as birdwatching and spotting an aardvark, which can be considered the ultimate spotting by the guide.
3. Wellness as a way of life
Virtuoso suggests escaping stress in either "the happiest country in the world" or "the Land of Smiles" - Bhutan or Thailand, which are wellness destinations.
The Gross National Happiness (GNH) index in Bhutan measures the collective happiness and well-being of its population, which has been a significant factor in shaping the country's tourism and economic policies since its implementation in 2008.
It's more affordable to visit the country during its temporary reduction of the daily $200 Sustainable Development Fee.
Virtuoso advisors suggest both well-known areas such as Chiang Mai and Koh Samui, as well as more secluded spots for Thailand.
The InterContinental Khao Yai Resort is a luxury upcycled railroad carriage spa and hotel located 2.5 hours from Bangkok, near the UNESCO-designated Khao Yai National Park.
4. The seasons of Japan
Japan Rail Pass, the fastest-growing travel website in the US, will not aid travelers in exploring North America but will assist them in navigating Japan via train.
Among American users, the website experienced the greatest increase in average monthly traffic (+239%) from 2022 to 2023, indicating a growing interest among international visitors, according to Similarweb's data analytics.
Travelers flock to Japan during spring to witness the blooming of Sakura in cities like Kyoto and Kanazawa. However, company advisors suggest that visitors should also consider a winter trip when ski season is at its peak and Mount Fuji's summit is covered in snow.
5. Expedition cruises
The 'breakout travel trend of the decade' is expedition cruises.
Smaller vessels with fewer people offer the convenience of a cruise ship.
Expedition cruises, which are popular in destinations ranging from Antarctica to the Galapagos Islands, typically feature experts onboard, including historians and geologists, and are geared towards adventurous travelers.
James Cole, founder of Panache Cruises in the U.K., stated to CNBC Travel that an increasing number of individuals are seeking unique holidays instead of typical ones.
The desire for adventure carries a touch of romanticism, reminiscent of the era of renowned explorers such as Hillary, Cousteau, and Shackleton.
6. Paris to Istanbul, via train
Several options exist for traveling from Paris, France to Istanbul, Turkey, a city located at the intersection of Asia and Europe.
None as luxurious and expensive as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, a Belmond Train.
In Europe, the train offers shorter trips, typically lasting one to two nights, except for the annual journey from Paris to Istanbul.
Before leaving the city in August, Virtuoso recommends travelers experience the Olympic Games before departing in style.
7. Passion travels
Taking your hobbies on the road is recommended by Virtuoso, even though they are often associated with the home.
For gardening enthusiasts, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May is a must-attend event, while book lovers can visit the Strahov Monastery library in Prague.
Paleontologist Brian Curtice leads enthusiasts on bone-digging and fossil-exploring trips across the United States through a new company called Dinosaur Trips.
Curtice stated that these trips are the dream of paleontology enthusiasts, featuring "amazing exhibits of dinosaurs, mammals, marine reptiles, pterosaurs, fish, and a comprehensive showcase of paleontological wonders."
8. Escape to a private island
Charting a private island is the ultimate secluded holiday, says Virtuoso.
You don't need to reserve the entire isle to have a comparable experience.
Private island stays offer a secluded escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with sandy paths and private villas replacing roads and traditional hotels.
9. Food festivals and private tours
A glimpse into a culture's past and present can be obtained through culinary tours, although they are not a novel concept.
The Mistura Food Festival in Peru or the street food of Ljubljana, Slovenia are both recommended by Virtuoso for exploring Peruvian cuisine.
The Curious Mexican's cooking classes and food tourism can directly benefit the local community.
