Last year, the United States saw the highest number of new renewable energy projects initiated, with Texas leading the way.
- Last year, the American Clean Power Association released a report stating that Texas was the country's leader in new renewable energy projects.
- Last year, Texas surpassed California in new wind, solar, and energy installation projects with 7,352 megawatts, while California lagged behind with 2,697 megawatts of storage projects.
- For decades, Republicans have overseen the energy sector in Texas, which still ranks 10th in the country for fossil fuel consumption, with nearly 90% of its energy derived from fossil fuels.
Last year, Texas was the country's leader in constructing new renewable energy projects, as stated in a recent report by the American Clean Power Association. This trend continues in a state that heavily relies on fossil fuels for energy production.
In 2021, Texas led the way in new wind, solar, and energy installation projects with 7,352 megawatts, surpassing California's 2,697 megawatts of storage projects. Oklahoma, Florida, and New Mexico followed closely behind.
Nearly 20,000 megawatts of storage is under construction or in advanced development in Texas, surpassing other states, while California follows closely with nearly 14,000 megawatts.
Renewable energy sources like solar and wind development are becoming increasingly popular in Texas due to their low costs, not necessarily because of concerns over human-caused climate change.
For decades, Republicans have overseen the energy sector in Texas, which still ranks 10th in the country for fossil fuel consumption, with nearly 90% of its energy coming from fossil fuels and only about 7% from renewable sources.
The state of Texas has managed to evade federal oversight by establishing its own power grid, which is almost entirely disconnected from the rest of the country. During a severe winter storm in 2021, the system experienced a catastrophic failure due to a sudden surge in demand and frozen utility plants, resulting in skyrocketing energy prices and triggering the state's worst blackouts in decades.
Despite the state's grid failure, Gov. Greg Abbott and other conservative state leaders falsely attributed the outages to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. However, the majority of the outages were caused by issues with natural gas production and frozen supplies at natural gas, coal, and nuclear facilities, rather than solar and wind failures.
Despite the increasing investment in renewable energy, more than 80% of total energy consumption in the country comes from fossil fuel production, as per data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
In 2020, the US installed 27,773 megawatts of wind, solar, and energy storage, a 3% decrease from the previous year, according to the American Clean Power Association report. The cumulative capacity of wind, solar, and energy storage reached 200,000 megawatts, equivalent to 200 gigawatts. Solar power increased by 19%, energy storage by 196%, and wind power decreased by 25% compared to the previous year.
Heather Zichal, CEO of the American Clean Power Association, stated that surpassing over 200 gigawatts of clean energy is a significant milestone for the United States and shows that we can achieve even more with strong public policy support for the industry.
Zichal stated that while the U.S. has made great strides, more needs to be done at a faster pace to meet climate goals and targets.
The House Democrats have renewed their demand for President Biden to implement the $555 billion in climate and clean energy funds from the Build Back Better Act.
The largest-ever federal investment in clean energy, which is part of the climate legislation, would aid the U.S. in achieving approximately half of Biden's commitment to reduce emissions by 2030, as per Rhodium Group's nonpartisan analysis.
