Jeff Bezos believes that Blue Origin, his space venture, will eventually surpass Amazon in size.
At The New York Times' DealBook Summit on Wednesday, Bezos stated that he believes the business he is currently involved in will be the best one he has ever been a part of, but it will take some time to develop.
In 1994, Bezos founded Amazon, which now has a market value of approximately $2.3 trillion. On the other hand, Blue Origin, which Bezos established in 2000, has never publicly disclosed its valuation. Unlike Amazon, Blue Origin is solely funded by Bezos through the sale of his Amazon stock.
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp questioned whether the space venture was "a hobby or a business," to which Bezos admitted that the space company "is not a very good business yet."
At the start of the year, Bezos was questioned by Limp, a former Amazon executive, before taking the top post at Blue Origin. As the company, perceived as a rival to SpaceX, has lagged behind its competitor due to delays and setbacks.
For many years, Blue Origin has been taking tourists and conducting research at the edge of space through short flights, including those piloted by Bezos himself. The company's projects range from rockets and spacecraft to space stations and lunar landers. Its next significant achievement is expected to be the launch of the New Glenn rocket to orbit, which Bezos claims the company is "very, very close" to attempting.
As "good competitors" in the space industry, SpaceX received praise from Bezos. Like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Bezos stated that he is not worried about Musk's close relationship with President-elect Donald Trump.
According to Bezos, Elon Musk has stated that he will not use his political power to benefit his own companies or harm his competitors.
