In summer 2025, American Airlines is expanding its flight options to Europe.
  • American is increasing its services to Europe from its hubs in Miami, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Philadelphia.
  • New destinations include nonstop flights to Greece, Scotland, Spain and Italy.

Airlines are preparing for the 2025 Europe travel season, assuming strong demand for international travel will persist in the summer.

The airline announced new routes to Europe for spring and summer next year, including nonstop service from Chicago to Madrid starting March 30, Philadelphia to Milan starting May 23, Philadelphia to Edinburgh, Scotland, beginning May 23, Charlotte, North Carolina, to Athens, Greece, beginning June 5, and Miami to Rome from July 5.

In the upcoming weeks, it is anticipated that both rivals will unveil their 2025 travel plans.

The American company announced that its trans-Atlantic capacity for the next summer will be lower than this year, but executives are optimistic that travel will still be a top priority for consumers.

""In '23, some speculated that the demand to Italy and Greece was a one-year thing. However, this year, the strength has continued, and our flights are full with strong yields. To address the demand, more capacity is needed," said Brian Znotins, American's senior vice president of network planning."

Why airlines like American are scrambling to make engines last longer

American's data reveals that travelers frequently connect in Europe to reach Athens, with Znotins stating this. In the upcoming year, American will offer four daily nonstops from the U.S. to Athens, which will be more than any other airline. Additionally, more travelers will be able to connect through American's hubs, such as Charlotte.

The airline is also resuming other European flights from its Philadelphia hub to Naples, Nice, and Copenhagen, as well as extending winter seasonal service between Miami and Paris into the summer season.

The delays in Boeing's delivery of 787 Dreamliners have caused American and other airlines to reconsider their flying routes and cut some international flights served by long-haul airplanes. Additionally, American is currently modifying some of its older Boeing 777s to create a larger business class cabin.

Next year's map was created by Znotins and his team, taking into account both things.

The aircraft delivery world is uncertain, and there is also uncertainty with our reconfigurations. However, we are confident that we will be able to fly the routes as we have published them. In an uncertain world, it's always beneficial to have a backup plan, like other hub cities serving Athens, in case a passenger needs to be rerouted.
