In December 2024, Boeing delivered 30 airplanes, but the gap with Airbus grew wider.
  • In 2024, Boeing delivered 348 airplanes, which was about a third less than the previous year.
  • As Airbus delivered 766 jetliners, the company's delivery gap with rival Boeing increased.
  • Due to a midair door plug blowout in January 2024 and a machinist strike in the fall, Boeing faced challenges in increasing production and delivery rates.

In 2024, the aerospace giant handed over 348 airplanes, which was about a third fewer than the previous year. The company faced a crisis following a midair door panel blowout and a machinist strike that halted production.

Boeing's delivery gap with Airbus, its chief rival, increased in 2020, as Airbus delivered 766 jetliners to customers, the most since 2019. Despite both companies facing supply chain strains that slowed production and fulfillment of their backlogs, Boeing lagged behind Airbus in deliveries.

Boeing resumed delivering 737 Max planes in December, following the end of an eight-week machinist strike. Deliveries are crucial for manufacturers as they mark when customers pay the majority of an airplane's cost.

This year, aviation data firm IBA predicts that rentals will hit records due to a shortage of aircraft from suppliers, which has caused lease rates to increase.

Why airlines like American are scrambling to make engines last longer

In December, Boeing received 142 gross orders for new aircraft, including 100 737 Maxes for Pegasus Airlines in Turkey and 30 787s for flydubai, whose intention to purchase was first announced at the Dubai Air Show in late 2023. Additionally, Boeing removed over 130 orders from its books for India's now-defunct carrier Jet Airways.

Boeing's gross orders for the year were 569, while net orders were 377 airplanes, including accounting adjustments. In contrast, Airbus reported 878 gross orders and 826 net orders for the year.

Boeing will release its fourth-quarter and full-year results on January 28, with CEO Kelly Ortberg and other executives set to address investor concerns regarding production plans and profitability restoration.
