In a 60-second Super Bowl ad, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Salma Hayek Pinault portray Greek gods, promoting the new iX electric vehicle.
The ad showcases the ex-California governor and actor as Zeus, the king of the ancient Greek gods and ruler of the sky. Hayek, on the other hand, is portrayed as Hera, the goddess of women, marriage, family, and childbirth.
The gods decide to relocate from Mount Olympus to Palm Springs, California.
Zeus struggles to adapt to his new life in the human world, while Hera seems to be doing well. Zeus uses his powers reluctantly to help others charge their devices, but has difficulty controlling a microwave and the electricity in his home.
The BMW iX, set to hit U.S. dealerships next month, is the ideal gift for Zeus as he prepares to take their small winged horse for a stroll. The electric SUV recharges Zeus' energy, and the two drive away in the vehicle, singing the 1980s hit "Electric Avenue" by Eddy Grant.
Since 2015, BMW has not advertised during the Super Bowl. However, this year marks a return to advertising during the game, with a focus on promoting a new EV and featuring the Eddy Grant song. The hosts of NBC’s “TODAY” show, Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel, were featured in the advertisement.
The new promo was developed by San Francisco-based agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners.
BMW released a commercial online Tuesday that will air during the third commercial break of the first quarter of the game on Sunday.
In the ad, Hera presents an electric SUV to Zeus as he prepares to take their winged horse for a stroll.
