In 15 years, Toyota is introducing its first new 4Runner SUV with a hybrid engine.
  • Toyota Motor unveiled a new 4Runner SUV after 15 years of no updates, as part of a recent redesign of their current trucks and SUVs.
  • The 2025 4Runner will feature a hybrid engine for the first time, along with a redesign that resembles the recently updated Toyota Tacoma pickup.

The automaker unveiled a new 4Runner SUV after a 15-year hiatus, as part of a recent redesign of its current trucks and SUVs.

The 2025 4Runner will have a hybrid engine, new "Platinum" and "Trailhunter" trims, and a similar appearance to the recently redesigned Toyota Tacoma pickup.

"The new 4Runner is an all-new addition to our truck family, offering incredible versatility and capability. Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager, stated in a release that the 4Runner has sold over 3 million units over the past 40 years and that this sixth-generation model boasts a cool new look and incredible features while retaining the rugged style and capability that customers love about this adventure icon."

The "truck family" from Toyota, commonly referred to as the "five brothers," includes the Tacoma, Tundra pickup trucks, and the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia SUVs. The 4Runner is the most recent model to be redesigned and constructed on Toyota's global truck platform, which was first introduced with the Land Cruiser and Tundra in 2021.

The 2025 4Runner pricing will be announced closer to its release date. The 2024 model's starting prices range from approximately $41,000 to over $55,000.

The 4Runner, a larger SUV from Toyota, had poor fuel ratings prior to updates, with a combined rating of 17 mpg or less, according to federal ratings. The current 4Runner has been on sale since 2010 with some updates.

The new 4Runner's miles per gallon ratings will be disclosed nearer to its release in showrooms in the fall, as Toyota's other redesigned trucks and SUVs have shown significant advancements in fuel economy.

Toyota Motor North America's executive vice president, Jack Hollis, stated last month that the company is still managing its truck and SUV offerings, which may include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric models.

"The brothers share many similarities and differences," he stated. "To reduce carbon emissions quickly, it's essential to find the right balance between the five products."

The 4Runner's available hybrid engine is a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission to produce up to 326 horsepower and 465 foot-pounds of torque. In contrast, the vehicle's standard turbocharged 2.4-liter engine produces 278 horsepower and 317 foot-pounds of torque.

The 2025 4Runner will be available in nine different models, including SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.

The Trailhunter model now includes extra off-road features such as rock rails and high strength steel skid plates, while the Platinum model focuses on luxury and convenience.

The 2025 4Runner is being manufactured at Toyota's Tahara plant in Japan.
