Fast-food chains such as KFC and Chick-fil-A are placing their bets on chicken tenders once more.
Chicken tenders are being reintroduced by fast-food companies such as KFC and to entice customers with a low-risk, high-reward option that is familiar and popular.
The percentage of fast-food restaurants serving chicken tenders increased by 5.7% in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period in 2019, according to Technomic's Ignite Menu data. Many eateries are now incorporating chicken tenders into other dishes such as salads and wraps.
Yum! Brands-owned Taco Bell is currently testing chicken strips in its tacos and burritos, while McDonald's is also experimenting with variations of its McCrispy sandwich, which will be available worldwide by the end of 2025.
The snack industry, worth $6 billion, has surpassed the children's menu. Take a look at Raising Cane's, which specializes in chicken fingers and has achieved a billion-dollar quarter. Their sales and traffic grew by double digits in the third quarter.
AJ Kumaran, co-CEO of Raising Cane's, stated that the product's taste and value have made customers into loyal fans.
"Kumaran stated that they are seeking everyday value and not a gimmick. However, they can provide that, which makes them optimistic about their future performance."
In October, KFC launched a "chicken tenders battle" campaign for its new tenders, with a satirical ad targeting its competitors. KFC representatives also distributed free samples of its tenders in front of Popeyes, Chick-fil-A, and Raising Cane's locations in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Atlanta.
Catherine Tan-Gillespie was appointed as the company's U.S. chief marketing officer just before the launch.
"Since we have the world's best-tasting fried chicken tenders, I felt it necessary to start a fight," she declared.
