  • In early November, Starbucks will remove Oleato olive oil-fused drinks from its U.S. menus.
  • Before Brian Niccol became CEO, the company had already removed drinks from its domestic menus as part of a strategy to simplify its complex menu, as stated by a company spokesperson.
  • Some users on social media expressed dissatisfaction with the combination of coffee and olive oil, stating that it caused a laxative effect.

controversial line of olive oil-infused drinks will leave U.S. stores in early November.

The removal of Oleato drinks from domestic menus was a decision made before the arrival of new CEO Brian Niccol in early September, but it aligns with his strategy to simplify menus as part of a broader turnaround plan to "go back to Starbucks," a company spokesperson said.

Bloomberg first reported the news of the drinks' departure.

Starbucks will release its fiscal-fourth quarter earnings after the market closes on Wednesday. Despite a decline in sales for the third straight quarter, the company attributed its performance to weak demand in the U.S. and China.

The Oleato line was conceived by Howard Schultz, but Wall Street has high expectations for Niccol's leadership to put an end to his outsized influence.

Starbucks' Caffe Latte, Iced Shaken Espresso, and cold foam now feature infused Partanna olive oil, with baristas steaming it with oat milk for the latte, shaking it in the iced espresso drink, and infusing it in vanilla sweet cream foam to top cold brews.

Schultz conceived the Oleato line following a visit to Italy, where he observed Sicilians consuming olive oil as a daily practice. Inspired by this, he incorporated olive oil into his daily routine and believed that Starbucks should blend the two together. Prior to the unveiling, he hinted at the concept as "alchemy" and a "revolutionary" change.

Oleato means "with oil" in Italian, according to Starbucks.

In spring of 2023, Starbucks launched its new line in Southern California, which was previously introduced in Italy. The line was then rolled out nationwide in January.

Schultz's high opinion of the drinks was not shared by customers, as early reviews in the U.S. press were largely negative and some social media users complained about the drinks' laxative effect.

Oleato drinks will still be served in cafes located in China, Italy, and Japan.
