- The MLS Cup commences on Saturday with a match between the New York Red Bulls and Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Major League Soccer Commissioner, Don Garber, stated that the state of soccer in the U.S. is robust and subscriptions are surpassing expectations as the league readies for the MLS Cup on Saturday.
Garber, who recently signed a new contract with MLS through 2027, stated that over 12 million fans attended games this year. Additionally, this enthusiasm extended to watching games outside the stadium.
"We have more subscribers than we and Apple initially estimated. We have more people viewing our games," Garber stated.
Some speculate that Apple's subscriber numbers might not be strong because the company has not released any subscriber numbers.
"At some point there'll be more transparency," Garber said.
The soccer commissioner stated that he is extremely satisfied with the relationship between MLS and Apple, as the platform allows for every game to be nationally broadcasted. Additionally, the start times have been simplified, with matches now starting at two distinct times instead of 60 different times, making it more convenient for fans to watch.
"We can now have technology, data, and multi-stream experiences that were previously impossible with linear or other streaming services. By partnering with a company like Apple, we can address problems and move towards a better future."
Lionel Messi will not be participating in the 2024 MLS Cup, which is set to take place in Los Angeles on Saturday. Meanwhile, Garber is preparing for the event.
The LA Galaxy will attempt to reclaim their position as the most successful MLS club, having won a record five MLS Cups. They will face the New York Red Bulls, who are striving for their first MLS Cup and experienced a remarkable transformation after finishing last season in 26th place out of 29 teams.
Garber stated that the team's commitment to competition parity means that any team could win on any given time.
Garber acknowledged that Messi's impact on the game has been unprecedented.
The pink InterMiami jersey was visible everywhere around the world, making it the top-selling jersey for Adidas, according to him.
He isn't concerned about life after Messi because he highlights the promising future of younger players.
"Garber stated that he believes there will be another Messi in the future and that the team has evolved from having big-name players who could make a significant impact in a crowded market."
