Commissioner says MLB is targeting a more national approach.
- The MLB is now focusing on amplifying players' talents and has a different trajectory than it did a couple years ago.
- At the CNBC x Boardroom's Game Plan event, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and MLB legends CC Sabathia and Albert Pujols discussed the recent alterations in baseball.
- The focus of MLB's future is on enhancing the on-field experience for fans, according to the statement.
On Tuesday afternoon, Manfred, CC Sabathia, and Albert Pujols spoke at CNBC x Boardroom's Game Plan sports business event, discussing topics such as regional sports networks and the significance of young stars like Elly De La Cruz to the game.
The MLB aims to expand its reach and become a more national sport, as per Manfred. While the league has traditionally been more regional, including in its broadcasting rights, Manfred believes that in order to grow the sport, a greater emphasis must be placed on taking MLB games to a broader audience.
"Manfred stated on CNBC's Scott Wapner that a more national strategy is needed due to the abundance of content, which includes 2,430 games. Although there may be a local component, the strategy should be more national and the reach should be expanded nationally."
The MLB, like other leagues, has been impacted by the bankruptcy restructuring of Diamond Sports, the largest owner of regional sports networks in the country. Some teams have already left the regional networks and turned to the MLB to produce and air their games instead.
The three panelists are thrilled about the MLB's star power, but Sabathia believes the league should focus on promoting star starting pitchers.

The number of complete games and intensity of two elite starters going head-to-head in baseball has decreased as pitchers have thrown fewer innings. The MLB has already made changes to the rules to keep pitchers in the game longer, and there are reports that the league is considering implementing a minimum inning requirement for starting pitchers, as ESPN reports.
Major League Baseball has recently undergone several changes, including rule modifications and field realignment, resulting in an increase in stolen bases and more opportunities for athletic plays.
The three panelists emphasized the importance of diversifying the MLB's audience. They pointed out that the league recognized statistics from the Negro Leagues for the first time this year and plans to increase its efforts in underserved communities to attract a broader range of players and fans.
