  • Traditional performance vehicles generate excitement through their sound, but electric vehicles struggle to differentiate themselves and replicate this excitement.

On Friday, Cadillac unveiled a new all-electric concept car that previews how the automaker intends to maintain the relevance of its high-performance V-Series vehicles for EVs.

The vehicle, named "Opulent Velocity," is a blend of luxury and performance for the V-Series, which is renowned for high-performance cars like the 6.2-liter V8 Blackwing, boasting over 600 horsepower and pound-feet of torque.

Cadillac executive global design director Bryan Nesbitt stated during a media briefing that the goal is to achieve the best of both worlds in the future, combining ultimate hyper-performance with ultimate luxury.

While electric vehicles can deliver impressive acceleration, such as 0-60 mph times of three seconds or less, automakers struggle to distinguish their vehicles and replicate the thrill of a traditional performance car's roar.

Cadillac officials emphasized that EV performance is not only about 0-60 mph times but also about handling and advanced technologies such as biometrics and Super Cruise.

Nesbitt stated that the goal is to maintain the brand's elevation.

Few details were revealed by Cadillac about the concept vehicle, which automakers typically use to gauge customer interest or indicate the future direction of a vehicle or brand. These vehicles are not intended for sale to consumers.

The concept car is a futuristic sports car with "scissor" doors that rotate vertically at a fixed hinge at the front of the door. It was unveiled during Monterey Car Week and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance car show in California.

The $300,000 Celestiq car from Cadillac is designed to position the brand more upscale, competing against Lamborghini and Rimac, rather than traditional rivals like Ford's Lincoln.

Despite a 1.7% decline in sales through the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2023, Cadillac's all-electric Lyriq crossover was the only one of its vehicles to experience an increase in sales.
