Boeing may face a guilty plea in the U.S. over the fatal 737 Max crashes.

Attorneys for the victims' family members of the two fatal crashes of 737 Max planes announced on Sunday that U.S. prosecutors plan to seek a guilty plea from the company, which they described as a "sweetheart deal."

On Sunday, attorneys from the Justice Department, along with victims' family members and their legal representatives, engaged in a discussion that lasted approximately two hours.

Boeing did not comment, and it was unclear if they would accept a plea deal. The Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment.

In May, the DOJ announced that it was examining whether Boeing had breached a 2021 settlement that shielded it from federal charges. The company had previously agreed to pay a $2.5 billion penalty for a conspiracy charge related to the 2018 and 2019 crashes of its 737 Max planes, which resulted in the deaths of all 346 people on the two flights.

The DOJ reviewed the agreement following a January flight of a new 737 Max 9, where a door panel blew out, causing a new safety and quality control issue for one of the world's two major commercial airplane suppliers.

In 2021, the DOJ accused Boeing of concealing a new flight-control system from the Federal Aviation Administration, which was later linked to two crashes. Two of Boeing's pilots were found to have defrauded the FAA by hiding the addition of this system to the planes before they were flown commercially.
