- Spirit AeroSystems will furlough some 700 workers.
- Since the strike of over 32,000 Boeing machinists on Sept. 13, the supplier has been frantically trying to reduce expenses.
As the strike by machinists at the planemaker continues for its sixth week, a spokesman for the supplier announced that they will furlough some 700 workers.
After more than 32,000 Boeing machinists rejected a tentative labor deal with Boeing on Sept. 13, the company had been scrambling to cut costs.
Boeing and the machinist union remain at an impasse.
CNBC reported on Friday that spokesman Joe Buccino stated that if the strike persists past November, layoffs and furloughs will be necessary.
The 700 workers at Spirit are assigned to the 777 and 767 programs for Boeing, where Spirit has accumulated "substantial inventory," according to Buccino. He stated that workers on Boeing's popular 737 Max are not affected.
Spirit is being acquired by Boeing, as reported by Reuters earlier.
