As labor talks continue, 500 Starbucks locations have voted to unionize.
- On Monday, Starbucks Workers United achieved a milestone as baristas at a Bellingham, Washington Starbucks voted to unionize, making it the 500th store to join the union.
- The union now represents more than 11,000 baristas across the country.
- Collective bargaining agreements for unionized cafes are being negotiated between Starbucks and Workers United.
On Monday, the 500th Starbucks Workers United store was located in Bellingham, Washington, with baristas joining the union.
Over 11,000 baristas have joined the union since the first location voted to unionize in 2021, as stated in a Tuesday press release.
"Lynne Fox, president of Workers United, stated that this milestone is a proof of workers' ability to build power from scratch. She added that Starbucks employees have bravely demanded a say in their jobs and, as a result, have secured strong contracts that guarantee respect, fair wages, racial and gender equality, fair scheduling, and more."
The union and Starbucks have been collaborating since February to establish a foundational framework through negotiations. They have been meeting at the bargaining table monthly since April, and the union has successfully unionized 100 new locations in the past six months.
Brian Niccol, the CEO of the coffee chain, stated last week that the company is dedicated to negotiating in good faith with the union in order to establish a labor agreement. The framework they are currently discussing will serve as the foundation for collective bargaining agreements between individual stores and the company.
The union stated that the negotiations have been fruitful and have led to the advancement of measures.
The baristas at the Bellingham branch wrote a letter to Niccol detailing their motivations for taking action.
The success of Starbucks' rebuilding depends on whether baristas receive the necessary support to perform their duties effectively, which will ultimately lead to a positive customer experience and repeat visits.
Representatives for Starbucks did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.
