A source close to the matter revealed to CNBC's Julia Boorstin on Tuesday that the company is proceeding with the spinoff of its cable network channels.
An announcement from the company about a possible separation of its cable networks could come as early as Wednesday, according to a source. The company had previously announced during its quarterly earnings in October that it was considering such a move.
The spinoff was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Apart from the spinoff, other networks such as E!, Syfy, Golf Channel, USA, and Oxygen will also remain part of Comcast's NBCUniversal. However, Bravo will not be included in the spinoff, as its content is heavily featured on streaming service Peacock, one of the people said.
It will take approximately a year for the spinoff to be launched as the company decides whether licensing agreements are necessary and whether MSNBC and CNBC will continue to collaborate with NBC News, according to two sources.
One source stated that Mark Lazarus, the current chairman of NBCUniversal's media group, will lead the new entity.
