On Monday, the unrivaled startup basketball league announced that it had closed a Series A funding round, bringing in an additional $28 million before its first season.

"Unrivaled President Alex Bazzell stated in a press release that the foundation being built with partners is unparalleled in expertise, strategic insight, and product. Together, they are setting the stage for Unrivaled's success for years to come."

In 2024, the 3x3 women's hoops league secured $7 million in a seed round, bringing its total funds to $35 million. The latest round was led by the Berman family and included NBA champion Giannis Antetokounmpo, 28-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps, and other notable investors.

In 2023, Unrivaled was founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, with the aim of providing every player with equity and a stake in the organization's success, as stated in the press release.

Across any women's professional sports league, the league boasts the highest average salaries for its 36 top players.

Despite the Women's National Basketball Association experiencing rapid growth, rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese were paid only slightly more than $70,000, in contrast to NBA star rookies who received millions their first year.

Last week, unrivaled announced that it had signed as its official uniform partner. Additionally, the league signed an exclusive, multiyear media rights deal with to air its games on TNT, truTV, and streaming platform Max. WBD also participated in the Series A funding round, the league said Monday.

The round of funding included private investor Marc Lasry, University of South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley, and USC guard JuJu Watkins, in addition to previous investors such as soccer phenom Alex Morgan and actor and investor Ashton Kutcher.

The inaugural season begins on January 17.
