No hurricane insurance policy can fully protect your home from damage caused by a hurricane.

To recover from a hurricane, a combination of homeowners insurance, windstorm coverage (which may have a separate deductible or be a separate policy in some hurricane-prone states), and flood insurance is necessary.

To discover the top homeowners and flood insurance options for safeguarding your home during the hurricane season, refer to our detailed methodology.

Compare homeowners insurance companies

Best for customer satisfaction

State Farm is a great choice for homeowners seeking excellent customer service and coverage. It ranked above average in J.D. Power's Overall Customer Satisfaction Index for homeowners insurance in 2024. Although it doesn't offer flood insurance directly, it could be an excellent option for those who already have coverage with a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy or are planning to get one.

Discounts are available for customers who incorporate storm-resistant features into their homes, such as a roofing discount and a wind mitigation discount.

Best for high-value homes

For high-value homeowners seeking flood insurance coverage, Chubb offers up to $15 million in property protection.

Chubb's flood insurance coverage includes finished basements, while some other flood insurance policies exclude this area. Additionally, Chubb's homeowners insurance offers extended replacement cost coverage, coverage for valuables and collections, and high personal liability limits up to $100 million, making it a suitable option for high-net-worth homeowners.

Best for bundling

Allstate offers both NFIP coverage and private flood insurance through Beyond Floods, making it a great choice for homeowners looking to get both types of insurance from the same company.

Allstate provides a multi-policy discount of up to 25% for bundling home and auto insurance, and Florida homeowners can receive a windstorm mitigation discount to reduce costs in the state.

Does homeowners insurance cover hurricane damage?

To cover all damage from hurricanes, homeowners insurance alone is not sufficient. Two types of damage can occur after a storm: flood damage and wind damage. To protect against both, separate policies are necessary.

Though not always the case, homeowners insurance may cover wind damage. You may be able to obtain windstorm insurance through your homeowners policy. If private market coverage is unavailable, some state insurance associations provide wind and hail damage coverage.

To be fully protected against flood damage during a hurricane, in addition to homeowners insurance, you must purchase a separate flood insurance policy from a private flood insurer or FEMA's NFIP.

States where hurricane deductibles apply

The deductible for homeowners insurance is the amount you must pay out of pocket if you file a claim for damage to your home.

Both flood and homeowners insurance policies have separate deductibles. While homeowners insurance policies usually have a flat dollar amount deductible, like $1,000, in some states, if your home is damaged due to wind, a named storm, or a hurricane, you may have to pay a percentage-based deductible in addition to your homeowners insurance policy deductible.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, 19 states have a hurricane or named storm deductible.
