Donald Trump, the newly elected president, appointed Kevin Hassett to head the National Economic Council, placing him at the heart of the administration's policy discussions on issues such as trade, taxes, and deregulation.
Trump has appointed Jamieson Greer as the U.S. Trade Representative, bringing him closer to completing his economic team. The move was announced on Truth Social.
Hassett was the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers for two years during Trump's first administration, where he supported the Republican's corporate tax cuts and defended Trump's punitive tariffs.
Hassett, a 62-year-old, collaborated with Jared Kushner on immigration and supported a plan to lift sanctions waivers for countries that purchase Iranian oil.
The appointment coincided with Trump's decision to increase tariffs on Chinese goods by 10% and impose 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian products, which would terminate a regional free trade agreement.
On January 20, Trump will be sworn in as the new US president. He has stated that illegal immigration and the drug trade are the reasons behind the tariffs.
Prior to his appointment as a White House advisor on fiscal policy in 2017, Hassett was a scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute think tank, focusing on fiscal policy.
Last week, Trump indicated that he planned to appoint Scott Bessent, the founder of Key Square Group and a skilled market expert, as his Treasury secretary.
