  • Up to 2,450 U.S. plant workers in Warren, Michigan, will be laid off indefinitely by Stellantis as it stops producing an older version of its Ram 1500 pickup.
  • The company has not announced a vehicle to replace the truck

The automaker intends to indefinitely lay off up to 2,450 U.S. factory workers this year in Michigan as it discontinues production of the older version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck.

Since the new generation of the Ram 1500 was introduced in 2018, the truck, produced alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, has been primarily used as a low-cost pickup to sell to entry-level buyers and fleet customers.

The 2025 Ram 1500, which has been recently updated, is manufactured at a nearby plant. Production at that facility will proceed as scheduled.

The Ram 1500 Classic production at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant will end later this year with the introduction of the new Ram 1500.

The discontinuation of the Ram 1500 "Classic" vehicle is not surprising, but the company has not yet announced a replacement vehicle, which is concerning for local governments, workers, and the United Auto Workers union, who represent the plant.

Stellantis is planning to cut production at several plants and may lay off workers as soon as October, following in the footsteps of other automakers that have faced sales issues.
