Nearly 275 million monthly users are using Facebook's rival to Elon Musk's X app, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who made the announcement on Wednesday.
Zuckerberg stated on a call with analysts that the app is still on track to become our next major social app, and he expressed satisfaction with its progress.
According to recent data, Threads has experienced a 175% increase in users from the previous year, reaching 275 million users. Additionally, the app has seen a 100 million increase in monthly actives since Meta's second-quarter report in July. Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday that the app is currently signing up more than 1 million users per day.
In July 2023, a new social app was launched as a competitor to Musk-owned X, who acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022.
Although X has more users than Threads, with Sensor Tower estimating 550 million monthly users in March 2023, X's U.S. user base has decreased by 23% since Musk bought the company in October 2023.
In the third quarter, Meta generated 98.3% of its revenue from ads.
"Susan Li, CFO, stated on the earnings call that Threads is not expected to significantly contribute to 2025 revenue at present. Instead, the company is focusing on developing valuable features for the community, with growth being the primary focus."
On Wednesday, Bernstein's analysts expressed excitement about Threads' growth.
Despite Meta's belief that Threads will not significantly contribute to 2025 revenue, the Bernstein analysts predict that ads will appear and expand on Threads in the next year.
Despite analysts expecting 3.31 billion daily active users, Meta's family of apps, including Facebook and Instagram, only grew by 5% year-over-year to reach 3.29 billion.
Meta shares were down roughly 4% on Thursday.
Li stated that the team is highly focused on developing the functionality of Threads and being attentive to users' feedback.
According to Luria of DA Davidson, Microsoft still needs to discover the "gold" in AI, despite Meta already benefiting from it.
