What is the reason behind your sudden interest in following President Trump on Instagram?
  • Numerous Instagram users have expressed dissatisfaction this week over Meta's requirement to follow President Trump's accounts without their approval.
  • The @POTUS, @VP, and @FLOTUS accounts are moved over when a transition of power occurs in the U.S., as stated by a spokesman for the company on Threads.
  • The social media handoff has been happening since at least 2017.

This week, Instagram users are expressing their dissatisfaction with being mandated to follow President Donald Trump's social media accounts without their approval.

During a Threads post on Wednesday, a Meta representative stated that users are encountering posts from @POTUS, @VP, and @FLOTUS because these accounts are transferred during a U.S. presidential transition.

"According to Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta, people were not obligated to follow any official Facebook or Instagram accounts for the President, Vice President, or First Lady. The content on these pages is managed by the White House, and therefore, changes with each new administration."

The @WhiteHouse account will continue to be followed by users who previously followed the accounts, as well as the former administration's archive accounts, during the transition of power, Meta confirmed in an email.

The third handoff from one administration to the next occurred during Trump's inauguration on Monday. Prior to the 2016 election, the Obama administration had addressed the matter in a blog post.

"The Obama administration announced that the incoming White House will inherit the Instagram and Facebook accounts, retain followers, but start with no content on the timeline. Additionally, an archive of Obama White House content on Instagram and Facebook will remain accessible to the public at Instagram.com/ObamaWhiteHouse and Facebook.com/ObamaWhiteHouse."

The Obama administration announced that all content created by its social media accounts would be preserved by the National Archives and Records Administration and new accounts would be established to preserve future content.

The accounts of former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and former First Lady Jill Biden have been moved to @potus46archive, @vp46archive, and @fotus46archive, respectively.

The political conversation on Meta's platforms has intensified after CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a series of decisions that seemed to be aimed at satisfying President Trump.

Despite donating $1 million to Trump's inauguration and attending the event in Washington D.C., Zuckerberg did not co-host a celebratory reception.

Mark Zuckerberg announced several policy changes for Meta this month, including eliminating third-party fact checking and ending the company's diversity, equity and inclusion program. The company also appointed Joel Kaplan, a former Republican White House staffer, as its new policy chief, and Zuckerberg, in an appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast, touted the benefits of masculinity.

Zuckerberg stated on the podcast that he believes there are benefits to having a culture that values aggression to a greater extent.
