On Thursday, workers at seven facilities in New York, Georgia, California, and Illinois went on strike to demand better benefits, higher wages, and safer working conditions.
Amazon is being pressured by the Teamsters union to negotiate a contract during the holiday shopping season through a strike organized by its members. The union had previously given Amazon until Sunday to agree to bargaining dates.
"Amazon's insatiable greed is to blame for package delays during the holidays, according to Teamsters President Sean O'Brien, who stated in a statement that the company ignored a clear deadline to negotiate fairly with the union."
An Amazon spokesperson stated in a CNBC interview that the Teamsters have been spreading false information for a year in an attempt to deceive the public. Despite their claims of representing numerous employees and drivers, the protesters at the sites are mostly outsiders, according to Amazon.
"The company stated that they couldn't obtain enough support from their employees and partners, so they hired outsiders to harass and intimidate their team, which is unacceptable and hazardous. Despite this, the company is still concentrating on delivering customers their holiday orders."
The Teamsters representative did not promptly answer CNBC's question about whether outsiders were involved in the strike.
Nearly 10,000 Amazon workers have joined the Teamsters union, which represents less than 1% of the company's workforce of 1.53 million, as of Dec. 31, 2023. The union claims that Thursday's campaign is the largest strike against Amazon in American history.
In 2022, Amazon faced a stinging defeat when warehouse workers on New York's Staten Island voted to join a union, despite the company's long-standing opposition to unions among its workforce.
In June, the Amazon Labor Union, which led the Staten Island movement, decided to join the Teamsters after failing to reach a contract agreement with Amazon.
