The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that Microsoft is in advanced talks to acquire cybersecurity firm Wiz for $23 billion, according to sources.

The people familiar told the Journal that a deal could come soon.

Since its inception in 2020, Wiz has experienced rapid growth under CEO Assaf Rappaport. The company had planned to go public as recently as May, when it reached a valuation of $12 billion.

A representative for Wiz declined to comment.

Wiz's cloud security solution offers executives and cybersecurity professionals comprehensive visibility into a company's cloud infrastructure, which is particularly attractive to large enterprises with substantial computing resources. The solution is backed by a portfolio of esteemed investors, including Israeli VC firm Cyberstarts, Index Ventures, Insight Partners, and Sequoia Capital.

Google's acquisition of cybersecurity firm Mandiant for $5.4 billion two years ago highlights its continued bet on cybersecurity, as nation state and criminal actors have disrupted governments and large organizations. If completed, this deal would be Google's largest ever acquisition, underlining its commitment to protecting its users and customers from cyber threats.

Google is currently facing intense antitrust scrutiny, with the Justice Department having sued the company twice on antitrust grounds. The most recent litigation, filed in 2023, focused on the company's acquisition practices.

According to reports, Google had been in talks to acquire sales software maker Hubspot, but its pursuit had reportedly cooled. However, recent talks with Wiz suggest that the company has developed a fresh appetite for M&A, despite competitive concerns.

Google did not immediately return a request for comment.
