  • On Thursday, Duolingo experienced a surge in users signing up to learn Mandarin, coinciding with a rise in the use of the Chinese social media app Rednote, which is similar to TikTok.
  • The number of Mandarin learners using the app has increased by 216% compared to the previous year, as confirmed by the company to CNBC.
  • TikTok's departure from the US market has led to RedNote's rise to the top of Apple's app store.

On Thursday, nearly 7% of shares rose after a significant increase in users signing up for Mandarin language lessons and a surge in the use of the Chinese social media app RedNote, which is similar to TikTok.

Duolingo reported that there has been a 216% increase in Mandarin learners using the app compared to the previous year, while Spanish, one of the most popular languages on the app, has only seen a 40% increase over the same period.

The Chinese social media app RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu, has been the top free app on the Apple app store for most of this week. The other top five apps include TikTok's Lemon8, U.S. social media start-up Clapper, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Threads.

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments last week on the future of TikTok in the U.S. and a law that could effectively ban the popular app. The justices appeared to favor upholding the law, and a decision could be made as soon as Friday. TikTok is reportedly preparing for a U.S. shutdown on Sunday.

RedNote has experienced a 20-fold increase in U.S. app downloads over the past week, making it the top beneficiary of the American user exodus, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. Meanwhile, a Duolingo spokesperson stated that the company's marketing team is proactive and has an established presence on Red, which is managed by their team in China.

Duolingo provides online and mobile courses in 42 languages, with Spanish being the most popular language on the app, followed by French and Chinese.

Last year, the Nasdaq experienced a 29% increase, but Duolingo's growth was even more impressive, climbing 43%.
