OpenAI has achieved a new milestone with 300 million weekly active users after months of C-suite changes, tender offers, and a rising valuation.
Last week, a source informed CNBC that OpenAI's weekly active user count was still at 250 million. On Wednesday, CEO Sam Altman disclosed the new figure at The New York Times' DealBook Summit.
In the upcoming year, the company aims to achieve 1 billion active users.
OpenAI is facing competition from Anthropic and Elon Musk's xAI, as well as established tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, in the generative AI market, which is predicted to reach $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.
On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the hiring of its first chief marketing officer, Kate Rouch, from crypto company Coinbase, indicating its plans to increase marketing efforts to expand its user base. In October, OpenAI launched a search feature within ChatGPT, positioning it to compete with search engines like Google, Microsoft's Bing, and Perplexity, and potentially attracting more users who would otherwise visit those sites to search the web.
On Wednesday, Altman refuted rumors that OpenAI had requested investors not to invest in its competitors, stating that those who chose not to would not have access to the company's "information rights," including its roadmap and other materials.
Since the launch of ChatGPT, OpenAI's valuation has increased to $157 billion, with Microsoft investing $13 billion. The company recently closed a $6.6 billion round and received a $4 billion revolving line of credit. As of last week, OpenAI is offering employees the opportunity to sell $1.5 billion worth of shares through a tender offer to SoftBank.
