Commissioner Goodell announced Monday that the National Football League suspended Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley for the 2022 season due to betting on games.

Ridley, 27, was on the non-football illness list for addressing his mental well-being during a five-day period in November when he bet on NFL games.

The NFL's success and the reputation of everyone associated with the league are contingent upon maintaining the integrity of the game, as Goodell stated in a letter to Ridley.

The integrity of the game, public confidence in professional football, and the reputations of NFL players are at risk due to the actions of every player, coach, owner, game official, and anyone else employed in the league.

Gambling is a huge part of the NFL's higher salary cap, says agent Drew Rosenhaus

The league said Ridley is eligible for reinstatement in February 2023.

Following his suspension, Ridley stated that he had wagered a total of $1,500 and added, "I don't have a gambling problem."

SportsTrust Advisors represents Ridley, but the firm did not respond to CNBC's request for comment.

In 2020, Ridley had his best season with the Falcons, recording nine touchdowns and 1,374 receiving yards.

His $11 million salary for the 2022 season could be forfeited due to his suspension under the "conduct detrimental" provision in the NFL's collective bargaining agreement with players.

The Falcons stated that they were informed about the NFL's investigation into Ridley's betting on February 9th and have fully cooperated with the investigation since then, supporting the league's findings and actions.

The Falcons announced that they will proceed with the decision made for the 2022 season.

The NFL has a $100 million per year data rights deal with a London-based data and technology firm, which includes Genius providing its integrity services to monitor betting around NFL games and track suspicious activity.

More than two years have passed since Ridley's last suspension for betting on games.

In March 2021, the NFL reinstated defensive back Josh Shaw, who had been suspended for betting on games while with the Arizona Cardinals in November 2019. Shaw is currently a free agent.
