iPhone 16 goes on sale: Apple CEO Tim Cook opens flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City

On Friday, Apple's stores worldwide welcomed customers for the launch of the iPhone 16, Apple Watch Series 10, and AirPods 4.

The new products were unveiled at an event this month and have been accessible for pre-ordering since September 13th. The company illuminated the glass cube at its Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York City, symbolizing the improved Siri, which will activate the borders of the new iPhone's screen when the feature is released next month.

Apple's latest iPhones signify the company's latest step into artificial intelligence, with new Apple Intelligence features set to launch in October. These features will enable customers to rewrite text, remove objects from photos, and engage with an enhanced Siri. However, the software advancements will only be accessible on iPhone 16 and the iPhone 15 Pro series.

On Monday, Apple shares dropped after analysts reported that demand for the latest iPhones was lower than anticipated. TF Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated in a note that first-weekend sales were down about 12% year-over-year from the iPhone 15 last year. Additionally, Barclays, JPMorgan, and Bank of America noted that shipping times could indicate lighter demand for the more expensive iPhone Pro models compared to the previous year.

UBS analysts advised investors not to overreact to lighter sales data, as it is also gathered by analyzing wait times for new iPhone models, which were longer last year due to supply chain disruptions.

"Our analysis predicted that the lack of a standout app and the somewhat underwhelming introduction of Apple Intelligence would decrease demand for the iPhone 16 before its announcement. Although we believe the iPhone/iOS features are more evolutionary than revolutionary, we advise investors not to overreact to initial tepid demand data."

UBS analysts stated that supply chain disruptions in the previous year caused a slight distortion of the data, resulting in longer wait times for customers for Pro models. Specifically, customers had a 41-day wait time for some iPhone 15 Pro Max preorders last year, compared to a 26-day wait time for the iPhone 16 Pro Max this year.

Despite the disappointing US and China data a week after launch, our view that a super-cycle is not imminent is supported by data across all models and regions.

The Apple Watch Series 10 boasts a larger display than its predecessors, while also supporting new features such as Sleep Apnea detection, in addition to the Series 9. Meanwhile, the AirPods 4 receive an upgrade with a smaller charging case and the option for noise cancellation.

Earlier in the week, CNBC evaluated the new iPhone 16 Pro Max and the Apple Watch Series 10.
