The launch of Apple Intelligence in the EU has been postponed due to antitrust regulations.
  • Apple has decided not to introduce three new features, including its Apple Intelligence AI product, in the European Union due to privacy concerns arising from the Digital Markets Act.
  • To encourage competition and prevent the dominance of large companies like Apple, the DMA mandates that services be compatible with different platforms.
  • Apple pledged to collaborate with the EU to devise a solution that would facilitate the release of new products.

Apple has announced that it will not release several upcoming features, including its flagship "Apple Intelligence" AI product, in the European Union this year due to "regulatory uncertainties" resulting from the bloc's Digital Markets Act anti-trust regulation.

Apple stated that it will not provide three features, including Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring, and enhancements to SharePlay, to EU customers because the interoperability requirements of the DMA could compromise the integrity of its products and risk user privacy and data security.

In 2023, the EU enacted the DMA, driven by concerns that tech giants such as Apple, Google, Facebook, and TikTok parent Bytedance were acting as gatekeepers, preventing smaller companies from competing. The DMA mandates that basic functionalities work seamlessly across different devices and ecosystems.

While iPhones and iPads are subject to interoperability requirements, Macs are affected by the DMA due to iPhone Mirroring, which enables users to mirror their iPhone onto their Mac's screen.

The loss of the company's AI product could be a disappointment to consumers. Apple Intelligence offers various services such as proofreading, rewriting, creating custom emojis, searching for specific messages, summarizing and transcribing phone calls, and showing priority notifications. Additionally, the company has partnered with OpenAI and has a roadmap for adding more models to the platform.

Apple's net sales in Europe for 2023 were $94.3 billion, which is just under a quarter of its worldwide net sales. However, Apple Intelligence won't be available in Greater China, which accounted for $72.6 billion of its 2023 sales.

The company aims to collaborate with the European Union to develop a solution that allows it to provide the desired features to its EU customers while maintaining their safety.
