The number of jobs lost by tech companies is increasing, with over 386,000 jobs shed last year and the first half of this year, according to Layoffs.fyi.
Despite the layoffs, the growing artificial intelligence market is providing the industry with renewed optimism.
Flo Crivello, CEO of AI startup Lindy, has been in San Francisco for almost 12 years and has never felt this kind of energy. He was also present during the mobile boom.
Crivello said it’s quite clear what’s driving the enthusiasm.
"In every cafe, restaurant, and conversation on the street, it seems like half the time, it's ChatGPT, AI, or the latest company being funded," he remarked.
In the first quarter of this year, more than $12 billion was invested in generative AI startups, compared to $4.5 billion invested in the space all of last year, according to PitchBook.
