- The NFL announced that its 2024 draft will take place in Detroit, and teams are set to begin seeking blockchain sponsorship deals this week.
- The 2021 NFL season generated nearly $2 billion in sponsorship revenue, and blockchain deals are expected to boost that amount in the upcoming season.
- The NFL is unlikely to see significant revenue from CBD sponsorships or jersey patch advertisements in the near future.
The NFL's annual meetings commenced on Sunday and are already producing significant declarations.
The league announced that its 2024 draft will take place in Detroit, and teams are set to begin seeking blockchain sponsorship deals this week.
Nearly $2 billion in NFL sponsorship revenue was recorded for the 2021 season, and it is predicted that blockchain deals will boost this figure in the upcoming season. Last week, the league announced that it would relax its rules against teams partnering with blockchain technology companies.
Teams are still banned from cryptocurrency sponsorships, however.
NFL Chief Revenue Officer Rennie Anderson stated, "We can learn a little from the marketplace rather than acting like we know everything. We have the ability to let the marketplace determine their own value in the category."
The NFL is unlikely to see significant revenue from CBD sponsorships or jersey patch advertisements in the near future.
The NFL committed $1 million to researching the effects of CBD on pain relief and concussions in football players last month. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in cannabis plants.
The NFL prohibits cannabis use and will not permit players to participate in research studies. Additionally, NFL media partners are not permitted to advertise CBD during games.
Anderson stated that the NFL would adopt a cautious stance regarding CBD, but it is not yet near to endorsing sponsorships, despite CBD being legalized.
She stated that CBD sponsorships are not up for discussion and she is uncertain when it will be brought up.
Anderson questioned the need for NFL jersey patch advertisements, stating that the trend is being resisted by the league.
The NBA, NHL, and now MLB have all implemented patch programs that could generate significant revenue for their respective clubs.
The other leagues can test out the idea, but I can't imagine Matthew Stafford winning the Vince Lombardi Trophy with a third-party brand on his chest. There isn't a need for it.
Blockchain rights hit the market
This week, the league will introduce its latest resource to prospective partners, as per Anderson's statement to CNBC.
The NFL has announced that it is allowing league clubs to seek sponsorships from blockchain platforms such as Coinbase and FTX. Anderson stated that the assets could attract multiple partners to hold rights, including the NFL's "official digital wallet" and "official blockchain" partners. She described the category as an "endless opportunity" but added that the NFL is still learning about the technology.
Blockchain technology not only has uses for cryptocurrencies but also provides NFTs with unique and unalterable certificates of authenticity.
Anderson stated, "I believe we'll gain insight into how it can change our future through its application and use cases."
Anderson, like other NFL executives, expressed reservations about the future of cryptocurrency, despite the NBA's apparent enthusiasm for it. He stated that the NFL would approach the sector cautiously and prioritize protecting its business interests. This may be influenced by ongoing regulatory discussions surrounding cryptocurrency.
Anderson stated, "It's not necessary for us to be the first, but when we take action, we must ensure it is perfect."
2024 NFL Draft awarded to Detroit
The NFL draft will take place at Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit on April 24, as announced by the league on Monday.
The 2022 NFL Draft, which took place in Las Vegas, saw Detroit as a finalist. The 2023 draft will be held in Kansas City.
The 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville had a significantly higher economic impact than the 2020 virtual draft in Cleveland, which generated approximately $42 million.
Lions CEO Rod Wood stated that the economic impact of the 2024 event will be substantial, but he did not provide specific figures.
The 2022 "Hard Knocks" documentary series on HBO will feature the franchise, with the season premiering on Aug. 9.
