Tesla recalls its Cybertruck for the sixth time in a year.
  • On Wednesday, the National Highway Traffic Administration received a filing from Tesla stating that they are voluntarily recalling 2,431 Cybertrucks due to defective drive inverters.
  • In a year, Tesla's Cybertruck has experienced six recalls.

The National Highway Traffic Administration announced on Wednesday that it is recalling 2,431 Cybertrucks to replace defective drive inverters.

Since its release a year ago, the Cybertruck has been recalled six times in the U.S., with a base price of approximately $80,000.

Tesla resolved the previous Cybertruck recall by implementing an over-the-air software update to rectify a problem that caused the backup camera images to appear incorrectly on the screen after the driver shifted into reverse. The current Cybertruck recall necessitates the replacement of a component called a drive inverter, which powers the vehicle's wheels.

Tesla stated that if the inverter stops producing torque, the driver cannot apply torque to the vehicle using the accelerator pedal, which may increase the risk of a collision due to a loss of propulsion.

In the third quarter of 2024, the Cybertruck ranked third in the U.S. as the best-selling fully electric vehicle, surpassed only by Telsa's Model Y and Model 3 EVs.

Tesla is currently under investigation by the NHTSA for potential safety issues in its vehicles, with the most pressing concern being the safety of its premium driver assistance system, "Full Self-Driving Supervised," in reduced visibility conditions such as glaring sunlight and fog.

The conflict between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and federal regulators, particularly the NHTSA, has been highlighted since the election of Donald Trump last week.

As the principal backer of President-elect Trump's campaign, Musk has been granted a role in a new office called the Department of Government Efficiency by Trump. Although the office has not yet been formed or funded by Congress, Musk intends to use his influence to reduce federal spending and regulations and alter federal motor vehicle safety standards, which are partly enforced by NHTSA.

Tesla didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tesla's success is attributed to Elon Musk's support for Trump.
