On Thursday, shares of the company fell more than 12% after reports emerged that the Justice Department had launched an investigation into the company, which has profited significantly from the artificial intelligence industry.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the probe into the company is still in its early stages, following Hindenburg Research's disclosure of a short position in late August. Hindenburg claimed to have found "fresh evidence of accounting manipulation" in its report, but CNBC could not independently verify these claims.

Super Micro produces servers that businesses utilize for websites, data storage, and other applications, including AI algorithms. Notable customers of the company include major players in AI such as Nvidia, AMD, and Intel.

The Journal reports that a prosecutor in the U.S. attorney's office in San Francisco has requested information about a former employee who has previously accused Super Micro of accounting violations.

Super Micro announced that it would not submit its annual report for the fiscal year on schedule with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, causing shares to drop nearly 20%. The reason for the delay is unclear.
