  • Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, refuted claims made by Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, in March that Alphabet should be further ahead in the AI arms race.

CEO Sundar Pichai is challenging CEO Satya Nadella to an AI duel.

Well, sort of.

Pichai expressed his desire to conduct a comparison of Microsoft's models and their own models at any time, speaking at The New York Times' Dealbook Summit on Wednesday with interviewer Andrew Ross Sorkin.

After Sorkin read aloud comments from an interview Nadella did earlier this year, in which the Microsoft CEO questioned Google's position in the AI race following the search giant's AI product failures earlier this year, Pichai made his remarks.

"Nadella stated in March on Norges Bank Investment Management's podcast that Google should have been the default winner in big tech's AI race due to its competency, talent, compute, vertical integration, and control over data, silicon, models, products, and distribution."

"Sorkin questioned Pichai about his position in the AI industry compared to other players after reading Nadella's comments."

Pichai stated that they were utilizing someone else's models, and he expressed his desire to conduct a side-by-side comparison.

"You're throwing down the gauntlet," Sorkin responded.

Pichai shook his head while laughing, expressing his respect for the team.

OpenAI's Large Language Models are the driving force behind Microsoft's recent AI advancements, despite Microsoft having its own AI models.

Since the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI in late 2022, the market for chatbots and AI tools has experienced significant growth, offering consumers a new way to obtain information online beyond traditional search methods. Following this, Microsoft announced a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into the Bing search engine.

Google has been using its own LLMs to power its AI and search products for years, with its latest series being the Gemini models that compete with OpenAI's GPT models. The company announced more advanced Gemini products in May.

The ongoing AI arms race between Microsoft and Google has intensified, with the latest comments being made by tech companies.

In October, Microsoft accused Google of running "shadow campaigns" in Europe, alleging that these efforts were aimed at discrediting the search giant with regulators.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Pichai's comments.
