Sony introduces enhanced PlayStation 5 Pro to revitalize flagging console market.
- On Tuesday, Sony launched an enhanced version of its PlayStation 5 console, named the PlayStation 5 Pro.
- It will launch Nov. 7 for $700 in the U.S.
- The PS5 Pro boasts larger storage, faster rendering, and AI-driven "upscaling" to enhance graphics.
The PlayStation 5 Pro, an enhanced version of the gaming console, was announced on Tuesday and will be available on Nov. 7 at a cost of $700.
Sony's updated PS5 console is launched during a global decline in console sales. In the first quarter, Sony sold 2.4 million units of its PlayStation 5 console, compared to 3.3 million in the same period last year.
Sony announced that the PS5 Pro will have a 67% increase in compute units on its graphics card, resulting in up to 45% faster rendering of gameplay. Additionally, the new AI capabilities will enhance graphics with sharper image clarity and more detailed visuals.
The PS5 Pro utilizes "advanced" ray tracing, a method in computer graphics that mimics how light reflects off mirrored surfaces.
Sony announced that the PS5 Pro includes a 2-terabyte solid-state drive, larger than the 825 GB solid-state drive in the PS5. The controller is Sony's DualSense Wireless Controller, and it supports Wi-Fi 7. An Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive will be sold separately.
Sony has announced that several games will have a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" designation, featuring improvements that work specifically on the new console. Some of the games that will receive this designation include "Alan Wake 2," "Assassin's Creed Shadows," "Demon's Souls," "Dragon's Dogma 2," "Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth," "Gran Turismo 7," "Hogwarts Legacy," "Horizon Forbidden West," "Marvel's Spider-Man 2," "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart," and "The Last of Us Part II Remastered."
