A robot startup in San Francisco, Physical Intelligence, has secured $400 million in funding at a $2.4 billion post-money valuation, as confirmed by the company to CNBC on Monday.
Jeff Bezos, OpenAI, Thrive Capital, Lux Capital, Khosla Ventures, and Sequoia Capital are investors in Physical Intelligence, according to a spokesperson.
Physical Intelligence's current valuation is six times higher than its March seed round, which was valued at $70 million with a $400 million valuation. Its workforce comprises alumni from DeepMind, X, and other prestigious institutions.
The startup aims to bring general-purpose AI into the physical world by developing large-scale AI models and algorithms to power robots. The company has spent the past eight months developing a general-purpose AI model for robots, which it hopes will be the first step towards its ultimate goal of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), a term used to describe AI technology that equals or surpasses human intellect on a wide range of tasks.
OpenAI has recently introduced a search feature within ChatGPT, its popular chatbot, to improve its competition with search engines such as Google, Microsoft's Bing, and Perplexity. Additionally, the company raised $157 billion in its latest funding round last month.
Physical Intelligence's vision is that one day users can easily ask robots to perform any task they need, just like they can ask large language models (LLMs) and chatbot assistants. The startup provides examples of how its technology could enable a robot to do laundry, bus tables, or assemble a box in case studies.
