  • Facebook and Instagram have prolonged their prohibition on new political advertisements beyond Election Day in the United States.
  • The ad blocking will continue "later this week," as Meta did not specify the exact day it will be lifted.
  • The policy was implemented because the company acknowledges that there might not be enough time to challenge new claims made in advertisements.

Facebook and Instagram have prolonged their prohibition on fresh political advertisements beyond Election Day in the United States.

The social media giant updated its political ads policy on Monday, extending the ban on new ads past Tuesday.

The company did not specify the day it will lift the restriction on political advertising, stating only that it will continue "later this week." The reason for the extension of the restriction period was not disclosed.

In August, the company declared that only political ads that had been shown at least once before October 29th would be permitted to run on Meta's platforms during the final week before Election Day. Other political advertisements would not be allowed.

Meta announced that organization with eligible ads will have limited editing capabilities while the restriction is still in place. However, these advertisers will be allowed to make scheduling, budgeting, and bidding-related changes to their political ads, Meta said.

Meta implemented the same policy in 2020, stating that it was done to acknowledge the possibility that there may not be enough time to challenge new claims made in advertisements.

Alphabet, Google's parent company, recently announced a similar ad policy update, stating that they would halt ads related to U.S. elections from being displayed in the U.S. after the final polls close on Tuesday. They will notify advertisers when they lift the pause.

Over the past week, approximately $900 million has been spent on political advertisements across the United States, with the majority of the funds allocated to contests for lower offices, as per information from AdImpact.
