Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook-parent, claimed that the Biden Administration "pressured" him to "censor" content related to Covid-19, and he regrets some of the decisions taken in relation to the U.S. government's requests.

In 2021, the Biden Administration repeatedly pressured Facebook to censor COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed frustration when Facebook did not comply.

On Monday, the Committee posted a letter on its Facebook page and X social media account.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed the letter's authenticity to CNBC.

Zuckerberg stated that although it was ultimately Meta's decision to remove any content, he believes that the "government pressure was misguided."

Zuckerberg expressed regret over not being more vocal about the issue.

The White House has not yet responded to NBC News' request for comment.

The White House stated in a Politico interview that the administration took responsible actions to safeguard public health during the pandemic.

We have consistently maintained that tech companies and other private actors should consider the impact of their actions on the American people while making their own decisions regarding the information they present.

With hindsight and new information, Zuckerberg stated that Meta would not make the same choices again.

Zuckerberg stated that he strongly believed in maintaining content standards and would not compromise them due to pressure from any administration, adding that they were prepared to push back if necessary.

In August 2021, Facebook announced that it had taken down over 20 million posts related to Covid-19 due to violating its content guidelines on both its main platform and Instagram.

In that year, the White House condemned social media companies, including Facebook, for facilitating the dissemination of false information about the Coronavirus on their platforms.

The debate about content moderation on social media platforms is emphasized by Zuckerberg's letter.

The House Judiciary Committee, led by Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, has claimed that big tech companies conspired with the government to suppress free speech.

Zuckerberg discussed his stance on the upcoming U.S. presidential vote and revealed that he made contributions via the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative towards electoral infrastructure during the previous election. However, he stated that he will not be making such contributions for the upcoming election.

Zuckerberg stated that his objective is to remain impartial and avoid taking any sides, or giving the impression of doing so.
