On Thursday, Amazon revealed its online advertising unit's latest quarterly financial results, which were part of its second-quarter earnings report. Despite this, the company's overall second-quarter sales of $147.98 billion fell short of analyst estimates of $148.56 billion.

The online advertising unit of Amazon is rapidly expanding and changing the digital advertising industry, despite being relatively small compared to its core online retail business. Analysts had predicted that Amazon would report online advertising sales of $13 billion. However, Meta and Alphabet still dominate the industry.

Despite the challenges posed by Apple's iOS privacy update in 2021 and the emergence of smaller social media competitors like Snap and Pinterest, Meta's online advertising sales have shown signs of improvement in 2022.

On Wednesday, Meta reported second-quarter earnings that surpassed expectations and showed that the company has improved its advertising technology. Specifically, Meta stated that its second-quarter overall sales, which primarily come from advertising, increased by 22% year-over-year to $39.07 billion.

Meta's revenue growth rate was double that of Google's ad business.

At the time, Alphabet reported its second-quarter YouTube advertising sales as $8.66 billion, which fell short of analyst predictions of $8.93 billion.

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that its search and news advertising sales increased by 19% year-over-year in the second quarter.

In their latest reports, smaller online-advertising powered businesses such as Pinterest, Spotify, and others reported revenue growth of 16%, 21%, and 20%, respectively.
