Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI, reveals his latest AI venture, Safe Superintelligence.
  • On Wednesday, Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder of OpenAI who left the company in May, revealed his new venture.
  • He's calling the company Safe Superintelligence, or SSI.
  • Sutskever was among the board members at OpenAI who disagreed with Altman about the company's approach to AI safety.

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI and who recently left the company, has launched a new AI startup called Safe Superintelligence, or SSI.

"Sutskever announced on Wednesday that he was launching a new company with a single focus on pursuing safe superintelligence."

OpenAI's chief scientist, Sutskever, co-led the company's Superalignment team with Jan Leike, who also left in May to join rival AI firm Anthropic.

The Superalignment team at OpenAI, which aimed to manage and direct AI systems, was disbanded following the departure of Sutskever and Leike.

Sutskever will continue to focus on safety at his new startup.

"SSI's mission, name, and product roadmap are all centered on SSI because it is their sole focus. This focus allows them to avoid distractions from management overhead and product cycles, and their business model ensures that safety, security, and progress are not impacted by short-term commercial pressures."

Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, formerly of OpenAI, are joining Sutskever in starting a new company with offices in Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv.

Sutskever was among the OpenAI board members who tried to remove Sam Altman from his position in November due to disagreements over the organization's approach to advanced AI.

Before his reinstatement, Sutskever publicly apologized for his role in the ordeal following Altman's sudden ouster.

"Sutskever expressed regret for his involvement in the board's decisions on X on Nov. 20, stating that he never intended to cause harm to OpenAI. He expressed his love for the company and pledged to work towards reuniting it."
