To quickly summarize long PDFs, follow this guide and use Anthropic's Claude AI chatbot.

You can upload PDFs, DOCX, CSV, and TXT files directly to Claude and obtain a concise summary of PDFs on various topics by typing a command such as "Summarize PDF."

When Claude was given two different publicly available PDFs of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” he returned two different summaries of the novel. Each response included the main plot points. However, Claude may return different summaries for the same PDF even when given the same command, but each summary is still accurate.

Claude was effective for other content as well. The program produced a clear bulleted list of revenue, net income, and other financial information from the most recent earnings report, which were all accurate. This meant that I didn't have to sift through the earnings results to locate the high-level numbers I was seeking.

The free version of Claude has restrictions. It cannot handle PDFs larger than 10 megabytes and it seems to have a limit of five summaries every four hours.

Here’s how to use Claude AI to summarize text:

• Open your preferred internet browser and navigate to claude.ai.
• After entering your email, check your email and enter the verification code sent to you by the site.
• Please enter your name, confirm your age over 18, and agree to the terms of use and privacy policy.
• Enter your phone number and, again, enter the verification code.
• Three screens with information about Claude will appear. Please proceed by clicking through them.
• To upload a document, press the paper clip on the left-hand side of the bar.
• Click the PDF or other type of file you want to upload.
• Type a command, such as “Summarize.”
• Press the airplane logo on the search bar.
